Harry Blackmun was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 12, 1908. He was the son of a lawyer and a schoolteacher. Blackmun attended Vanderbilt University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1929 and a law degree in 1932. After graduating from law school, Blackmun worked as a law clerk for a federal judge in Minnesota. He then went into private practice, where he specialized in corporate law.

In 1959, President Dwight Eisenhower appointed Blackmun to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Blackmun served on the Eighth Circuit for 14 years, and he wrote many important opinions. In 1970, President Richard Nixon appointed Blackmun to the Supreme Court. Blackmun served on the Supreme Court for 24 years, and he wrote many important opinions. He was a moderate conservative, and he was known for his fairness and his willingness to compromise.

One of Blackmun's most famous opinions was his dissent in the case of Roe v. Wade (1973). In Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court held that the Constitution protects a woman's right to have an abortion. Blackmun dissented from the Court's opinion, arguing that the Constitution does not protect a woman's right to have an abortion. Blackmun's dissent was one of the most important dissents in the history of the Supreme Court.

Blackmun retired from the Supreme Court in 1994. He died in 1999. Blackmun was a brilliant jurist and a fair and compassionate judge. He was a credit to the Supreme Court and to the legal profession.

Blackmun's Legacy

Blackmun's opinions were always well-reasoned and carefully written. He was not afraid to dissent from the Court's opinion when he believed that the Court was wrong. Blackmun's legacy will continue to inspire judges and lawyers for generations to come.
