Ernie the Elephant and Martin the Monkey were best friends. They loved to play together, go on adventures, and share everything. But there was one thing they couldn't agree on: bedtime.
Ernie was an early bird. He loved to go to bed early and get a good night's sleep. Martin, on the other hand, was a night owl. He loved to stay up late and play. This difference in their sleep schedules caused a lot of problems at bedtime.
Every night, Ernie would get ready for bed early. He would brush his teeth, put on his pajamas, and get into bed. But just as he was about to fall asleep, Martin would come into the room and start playing. Ernie would try to ignore him, but Martin was too loud and too playful to ignore.
One night, Ernie had had enough. He got out of bed and marched over to Martin. "Martin," he said, "I'm trying to sleep. Can you please be quiet?"
Martin stopped playing and looked at Ernie. "But I don't want to go to bed," he said. "I want to play."
Ernie sighed. "I know you don't want to go to bed," he said. "But I'm really tired. Can't you just play for a little while longer and then go to bed?"
Martin thought for a moment. "Okay," he said. "I'll play for a little while longer. But then I'm going to bed."
Ernie smiled. "Thank you," he said. "I appreciate it."
Martin went back to playing, and Ernie closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. A few minutes later, Martin came over to the bed and got in. He snuggled up next to Ernie and fell asleep.
Ernie smiled. He was glad that he and Martin had finally learned to compromise. They had found a way to share their bedtime that worked for both of them.
The next night, Ernie and Martin went to bed at the same time. They brushed their teeth, put on their pajamas, and got into bed. They both fell asleep quickly and slept soundly all night long.
Ernie and Martin continued to share their bedtime for many years to come. They learned to respect each other's differences and to find ways to compromise. They were best friends, and they loved each other very much.
