Weiland was born in San Jose, California, in 1967. He began singing and playing guitar at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was performing in local bands. In 1989, he co-founded Stone Temple Pilots with bassist Robert DeLeo, guitarist Dean DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz. The band's debut album, Core, was released in 1992 and was a huge success. The album spawned several hit singles, including "Sex Type Thing," "Wicked Garden," and "Plush." Stone Temple Pilots went on to release six more albums, and they became one of the most popular rock bands of the 1990s.
In 2003, Weiland left Stone Temple Pilots to form Velvet Revolver with former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum. Velvet Revolver released two albums, Contraband and Libertad, before Weiland left the band in 2008. Weiland reunited with Stone Temple Pilots in 2010, and the band released two more albums, High Rise and Stone Temple Pilots, before Weiland's death in 2015.
Weiland's death was ruled an accidental overdose. He had been struggling with addiction for many years, and he had been in and out of rehab several times.
