The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and giving. What better way to celebrate the countdown to Christmas than with a handmade advent calendar? This easy-to-follow guide will show you how to sew your own felt advent calendar, complete with free printable templates.
Materials you'll need:
- Felt in various colors
- Fabric scissors
- Sewing needle and thread
- Embroidery floss
- Ribbon or twine
- Small items to fill the pockets (candy, small toys, trinkets, etc.)
- Free printable templates (available at the end of this article)
Instructions:
Step 1: Print and cut out the templates
Download and print the free printable templates. Cut out the shapes from the felt in the corresponding colors.
Step 2: Sew the pockets
Fold each pocket shape in half and sew the sides together, leaving the top open. Repeat for all 24 pockets.
Step 3: Embroider the numbers
Using embroidery floss, embroider the numbers 1-24 onto the front of each pocket. You can use any stitch you like, such as the backstitch or the satin stitch.
Step 4: Attach the pockets to the backing
Arrange the pockets on the backing fabric in the desired order. Sew each pocket to the backing, using a slip stitch or a blanket stitch.
Step 5: Add the ribbon or twine
Cut a piece of ribbon or twine long enough to hang the calendar. Fold the ribbon in half and sew it to the top of the calendar, centered. You can also add a loop of ribbon or twine at the top for hanging.
Step 6: Fill the pockets
Now it's time to fill the pockets with small items, such as candy, small toys, or trinkets. You can also use the pockets to hide Christmas-themed riddles or jokes.
Step 7: Enjoy!
Hang your finished advent calendar and enjoy the countdown to Christmas! Each day, open a pocket to reveal a special treat.
Tips:
- Use different colors and patterns of felt to create a unique and festive calendar.
- Embellish the calendar with sequins, beads, or other embellishments.
- Make the calendar as large or small as you like, depending on the amount of space you have.
- If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-sew the calendar using a needle and thread.
- Get creative and have fun with your felt advent calendar! It's a great way to add a personal touch to your holiday decorations.
