Robert Cripe is one of the most mysterious figures in Southern Gospel music. He was a brilliant singer and songwriter, but he also had a troubled personal life. His career was cut short by mental illness, and he died in poverty and obscurity.

Cripe was born in 1934 in rural Alabama. He grew up singing in church, and he began writing songs at a young age. When he was 16, he joined the Stamps Quartet, one of the most popular Gospel groups of the time. Cripe quickly became a star, and he was known for his powerful vocals and his heartfelt songs.

In 1954, Cripe left the Stamps Quartet and formed his own group, the Robert Cripe Singers. The group was successful for a time, but Cripe's personal problems began to interfere with his career. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and he struggled with depression and anxiety.

In 1965, Cripe was admitted to a mental hospital. He spent the next several years in and out of hospitals, and his career was effectively over. He died in 1974 at the age of 40.

Despite his tragic end, Cripe's music continues to be loved by Gospel fans. He wrote some of the most iconic songs in the genre, including "I'll Fly Away," "The Lighthouse," and "He Set Me Free."
