Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Brian May was born in Hampton, Middlesex, England, on July 19, 1947. He was the eldest of four children, and his father was an electrical engineer. May's interest in music began at a young age, and he started playing guitar at the age of seven.
May attended Hampton Grammar School, where he met future Queen bandmate Roger Taylor. The two of them formed a band called Smile, which played covers of popular songs and began writing their own material.
Queen
In 1971, Smile was joined by vocalist Freddie Mercury and bassist John Deacon. The four musicians quickly gelled, and Queen was born. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1973, and it was followed by a string of successful albums, including "Queen II" (1974),"Sheer Heart Attack" (1974),and "A Night at the Opera" (1975).
Queen became one of the most popular rock bands in the world, and their songs were played on radio stations around the globe. May was a key part of the band's success, and his guitar playing was essential to their sound.
Solo Career
In addition to his work with Queen, May has also had a successful solo career. He has released several solo albums, including "Star Fleet Project" (1983),"Back to the Light" (1992),and "Another World" (1998).
May has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Paul McCartney, David Bowie, and Elton John. He has also written and performed the theme music for several films, including "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" (1988) and "Superman Returns" (2006).
Personal Life
May has been married twice. He was first married to Chrissie Mullen from 1974 to 1988. The couple had three children together. May married Anita Dobson in 2000.
May is a passionate advocate for animal rights, and he is a patron of the animal welfare charity Save Me.
