Early Life and Education

Groom was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1825. His father was a successful merchant, and his mother was a descendant of one of the city's founding families. Groom attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied architecture and engineering. He graduated in 1845 with a degree in civil engineering.

Career

After graduating from college, Groom worked for a number of years as a civil engineer. In 1851, he was appointed to the staff of the United States Capitol building. He worked on the building for the next 30 years, and he was responsible for designing and supervising the construction of many of its most important features, including the dome, the Rotunda, and the Senate and House chambers.

In addition to his work on the Capitol building, Groom also designed a number of other notable buildings in Washington, D.C., including the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. He was also a member of the National Academy of Design and the American Institute of Architects.

Legacy

Groom is considered to be one of the most important American architects of the 19th century. His work on the United States Capitol building is a testament to his skill and dedication. He is also remembered for his contributions to the development of American architecture and his role in the establishment of the American Institute of Architects.
