Carson McCullers was born Lula Carson Smith on February 19, 1917, in Columbus, Georgia. Her father, Lamar Smith, was a lawyer and her mother, Marguerite Waters Smith, was a homemaker. McCullers had two older brothers, Lamar Jr. and Reeves.

McCullers' childhood was marked by poverty and illness. Her father lost his job during the Great Depression, and the family was forced to move into a small apartment. McCullers also suffered from a number of health problems, including rheumatic fever and pneumonia.

Despite her challenges, McCullers showed a talent for writing at an early age. She began writing short stories and poems as a child, and she published her first story in a local newspaper when she was just 14 years old.

In 1936, McCullers enrolled at Columbia University in New York City. She studied writing and English literature, and she soon became friends with other aspiring writers, including Tennessee Williams and William Styron.

In 1940, McCullers published her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it established McCullers as one of the leading writers of her generation.

McCullers continued to write throughout the 1940s and 1950s. She published two more novels, Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941) and The Ballad of the Sad Café (1943),as well as a number of short stories and essays.

McCullers' writing often explored themes of loneliness, alienation, and the search for belonging. Her work was praised for its lyrical prose and its insights into the human condition.

In 1953, McCullers published My Autobiography. The memoir is a moving and deeply personal account of her life. McCullers writes about her childhood, her struggles with poverty and illness, and her rise to literary fame.

My Autobiography is a valuable resource for anyone interested in McCullers' life and work. The memoir provides insights into her creative process and the challenges she faced. It is also a moving and inspiring story of a woman who overcame adversity to achieve her dreams.
