Astrology in Elizabethan England

During the Elizabethan era, astrology played a significant role in society. People believed that the alignment of celestial bodies at the time of birth could shape an individual's character, life path, and destiny. Astrologers created horoscopes that provided guidance on various aspects of life, from health and wealth to relationships and career.

Shakespeare's familiarity with astrology is evident in his plays. References to celestial bodies, astrological signs, and astrological events abound. For example, in "Hamlet," the ghost of Hamlet's father proclaims, "The stars have fought against us." This line suggests that the tragic events of the play are influenced by the unfavorable positions of celestial bodies.

The Sun and the Moon

The Sun and the Moon are two of the most important celestial bodies in astrology. They represent the masculine and feminine principles, respectively. In Shakespeare's plays, the Sun often symbolizes the king or the male protagonist, while the Moon represents the queen or the female protagonist.

In "Macbeth," the Sun and the Moon are associated with the protagonist's rise and fall. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is praised as the "golden round" (the Sun),while Lady Macbeth is described as "the lesser light" (the Moon). However, as Macbeth becomes consumed by ambition and guilt, his solar radiance diminishes, and he descends into darkness. Lady Macbeth, once his guiding light, is also corrupted by power, and her lunar influence wanes.

The Planets

The planets in astrology represent different aspects of the human personality. Each planet is associated with specific traits, motivations, and experiences.

In "The Merchant of Venice," the planet Venus plays a pivotal role. Venus represents love, beauty, and pleasure. The character of Portia embodies these Venusian qualities, and her influence brings about harmony and resolution to the play's conflicts.

In "Julius Caesar," the planet Mars is prominent. Mars represents war, conflict, and violence. The assassination of Caesar occurs under the influence of Mars, and the subsequent bloodshed and chaos are astrologically foreshadowed.

The Zodiac Signs

The zodiac signs represent the twelve divisions of the celestial sphere. Each sign is associated with a particular element, modality, and ruling planet. In Shakespeare's plays, the zodiac signs often serve as metaphors for the characters' personalities and motivations.

In "King Lear," the character of Edmund is associated with the sign of Capricorn. Capricorn is known for its ambition, determination, and ruthlessness. Edmund's actions throughout the play align with these Capricorn traits, leading to his ultimate downfall.

In "Twelfth Night," the character of Viola disguises herself as a man named Cesario. Viola's birth chart likely contained a strong influence from the sign of Libra. Libra is known for its balance, harmony, and desire for justice. These qualities manifest in Viola's character as she navigates the complexities of her disguise.

The Houses

The astrological houses represent different areas of life, including home, career, relationships, and health.

In "Othello," the character of Othello is associated with the 10th house, which represents career and public reputation.

In "Romeo and Juliet," the character of Romeo is associated with the 7th house, which represents love and relationships.

The hidden astrological keys in Shakespeare's works provide a deeper understanding of the playwright's profound insights into human nature and the cosmic forces that shape our lives. By exploring these astrological connections, we gain a renewed appreciation for the complexity and richness of Shakespeare's literary genius.

While the astrological symbolism in Shakespeare's plays may not always be immediately apparent, it serves as a subtle and profound layer of meaning that enhances our understanding of the characters, their motivations, and the overarching themes of the plays.

As we continue to unravel the astrological keys in Shakespeare's works, we unlock a deeper appreciation for his mastery of language, his profound knowledge of human nature, and his enduring legacy as one of the greatest playwrights of all time.
